Popis: | Introduction: Pertussis is under-recognized in older adults, especially those with chronic conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is important to evaluate the incidence and associated economic burden of pertussis in these populations. Objectives: To estimate the burden of reported pertussis among ≥50-year-olds (≥50yo) and in a sub-population of COPD subjects (≥50yo+COPD), in England in 2009-2018. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink, GOLD and Aurum databases, linked to Hospital Episode Statistics. Occurrence of pertussis and COPD were identified by diagnostic codes. Incidence rates (IRs) of pertussis were estimated and healthcare resource utilization will be presented in the poster. Results: Among ≥50yo, 28.5 million (m) person-years of follow-up (PYFU) were included, with 1.6m PYFU of ≥50yo+COPD with relatively older patients. During the study period, IRs of pertussis were similar across groups (5.8 in ≥50yo and 4.7/100,000 PYFU in ≥50yo+COPD). IRs decreased with age in both groups. Yearly IRs varied from 0.8-12.4/100,000 PYFU. Conclusions: Data highlight the potential under-diagnosis of pertussis in older populations, given the similar but low reported incidence of pertussis in both cohorts. Further assessment of the real incidence of pertussis and its economic impact would help understand the associated disease burden in COPD patients. |
