Popis: | As the prevalence of cigarette smoking has declined in countries with the longest history of smoking, two patterns have emerged: the gap between smoking by males and females has narrowed, and smoking has become concentrated among people living in disadvantaged circumstances and on low incomes. The strong and growing interrelationship between sex, smoking, poverty and disadvantage raises important questions about the extent to which traditional approaches to tobacco control meet the needs of women on low incomes. We outline the approach that we have been taking to develop new and effective ways of addressing issues around women, smoking and low income in Scotland. Previously, few initiatives have been designed to meet the needs of women on low incomes, i.e. they fail to acknowledge the role that smoking plays in these women’s lives and to develop ways of helping them that do not blame the victim. In particular, we focus on the processes that have been involved in generating interest in this initiative, and the range of projects that are being funded. The project is based in Action for Smoking and Health (ASH) Scotland, and it consists of two stages. |
