This article is an essay. It takes itself seriously as a studious form of scholarship and writing. As such, it will fail to answer the question “What is studying?”. Instead, it evokes what is studious in essaying through its own paradoxical prose and its negative definition of studious essaying. Rather than posit a concept of study, the essay enacts a study of a story about study in Borges’ short study “Pierre Menard, the Author of the Quixote.” By essaying, this article testifies that there is something other than learning at stake in the educational practices, of thinking, reading, and writing. This is to study, which defies the logic of learning. |
