PIGMENTATION OF THE SKIN DUE TO VITAMIN A DEFICIENCY

Popis: Although the effects of vitamin A deficiency on the growth of the body and specifically on the eye have been recognized for more than twenty years, changes in the skin have been noted only within the past few years. We wish to report the following case in which there are lesions of the skin which we believe are due to a deficiency in vitamin A. REPORT OF CASE L. N., a woman aged 40, of Irish and Egyptian parentage, was first examined on June 9, 1939. She complained of an abnormal brown pigmentation which had been present on the wrists for one year and on the knees for three months. The past history was irrelevant. The patient's father had died of "kidney trouble"; her mother had cardiac disease and hypertension and was still living. There was no complaint of gastrointestinal crises or asthenia.
