Popis: | Two sub-fossil localities in San Rafael Valley, Santa Cruz County, provide new evidence about the timing and occurrence of Bison (bison) and Bos (cattle) in southeastern Arizona. A portion of the young male Bison skull was radiocarbon dated and produced a conventional age of 370±40 BP (intercept date of Cal AD 1490). Charcoal recovered in association with the articulated Bos skeleton produced a conventional age of 250±30 BP (intercept date of CAL AD 1650). Interpretations of the radiocarbon dates may vary; however, the intercept age implies that Bison was present in southeastern Arizona, but may have become extirpated just prior to the diary accounts of the Spanish explorations. It is not known if the recovered Bos was feral or perhaps belonged to Jose Romo de Vivar who farmed and ranched in the region from San Rafael Valley, Arizona, to Cananea, Sonora during the 1680s. Sub-fossil and zooarchaeological remains of bovids from Arizona and Sonora should be examined in more detail to better understan... |
