People with disabilities are grossly underrepresented in health research. Equal and just representation for persons with disabilities is necessary to improve health outcomes and to demonstrate respect for individuals who live with impairment. This chapter parses the causes for exclusion and sets forth a multidimensional approach for bringing people with disabilities into human subjects research. This chapter discusses the possibility and ethical challenges of several approaches, including the possibility of deeming disability status a demographic factor like age, gender, race, and ethnicity; possible regulatory and legislative changes; increased cultural competency; and a commitment to universal research design. If adopted, these suggestions would create the opportunity for researchers to conduct more inclusive research with more reliably generalizable results without compromising research integrity. |
