Preparation of polycrystalline and monocrystalline Fe3−xTixO4spinels

Popis: A method of preparing polycrystalline spinels of the mixed series Fe 3−x Ti x O 4 in the composition range0 ⩽ x ⩽1, with meta to oxygen ratios which deviate from the ideal stoichiometric value 3/4 by less than 0.05%, is reported. Single crystals of these compositions have been prepared by zone-melting the stoichiometric polycrystalline rods. Ulvospinel (Fe 2 TiO 4 ) is of special interest. It has proved possible to grow single crystals of this compound having a very small excess of iron(x ≈ 0.995).
