Levels of Analysis in Social Network Research: A State-of-the-science Review

Popis: The current study was conducted to present a state-of-the-science review of levels-of-analysis issues in social network research. We reviewed and coded 249 research articles (conceptual and empirical) published in 13 top-tier journals in the field of management and applied psychology. Variables coded in our study included (1) levels- related variables such as levels of network actors, levels-of-analysis of theory and hypotheses, degree of appropriate incorporation of levels of analysis in conceptual development, measurement and inference drawing, and (2) general variables such as type of network, research stream, year published, etc. Results revealed that although constructs and their relationships have been studied at all the levels of analysis (e.g., individual, groups, organizations, etc.), 85.1% of the articles focus on either individual-level actors or organizational-level actors.
