The objective of the work was to determine, experimentally, the shielding afforded by an open concrete-walled basement located in a simulated fallout field and to compare these experimental results with theoretical results published in National Bureau of Standards (NBS) Monograph 42. A cobalt-60 point-source circulation system was used to simulate a uniformly-contaminated residual gamma radiation area out to a radius of 600 feet. Experimental exposure-rate measurements were made in the free field and at various locations within the structure as a function of height above the basement floor. Ionization chamber dosimeters were used as radiation detectors. Experimental measurements were extrapolated to infinite-field conditions by use of analytical procedures and compared with other related experimental data and theoretical results. |
