Power Matching of Tandem Solar Cells

We show that the usual current matching condition for tandem solar cells is insufficient because the matching of the subcell currents minimizes the fill factor of the device. We introduce a new definition for the matching condition of tandem solar cells, i.e. a stack of solar cells is matched if the power output of each subcell is maximal at equal subcell currents. This definition automatically leads to a maximum power output of the device. To show this experimentally we use additional light emitting diodes in the characterization of the solar cell. The introduced measurement procedure is a new meaningful characterization tool for tandem solar cells. The procedure detects the power mismatch and furthermore allows for extracting the AM1.5g efficiency of hydrogenated amorphous/hydrogenated microcrystalline silicon tandem solar cells measured under non-calibrated spectra.
