The morphological gradient within the mandibular post-canine teeth of Tupaia glis was investigated odontometrically. The dp4 was small but stable in size, M1 and M2 were large but somewhat variable. P4 and M3 were both the smallest and the most variable. Thus the size sequence in the five postcanine teeth was M1>M2>dp4>M3≥P4, and the variability was dp4≥M1≥M2>M3>P4. These gradients were represented quantitatively by the total area (AREA) and ratio of talonid area (TL%). These results suggest that the shape gradient is closely related to occlusal function. |
