In acoustics, particularly underwater sound, it is often desirable to know the statistics of the amplitude distribution resulting from a finite time average of a rectified broadband noise (broadband in the sense that the bandwidth is comparable to or greater than the center of the band). Although the mean and standard deviation can be computed analytically for some input distributions, the output distributions have not been obtained. Some results are given for the case of a Gaussian input noise passed through a square‐law rectifier followed by various amounts of averaging. These results were obtained by simulating the detection process on a computer. Comparisons of the results are made to several limiting cases which can be determined analytically and to some measurements which have been reported in the literature.
