The acute presentation of rectal and anal cancer can be varied and difficult to manage. Accurate diagnosis and staging are crucial first steps in management of each malignancy. Indications for acute intervention include obstruction, hemorrhage, and perforation. If the patient has failed initial attempts at conservative or endoscopic management, surgical options should be considered. Operative considerations include low anterior resection, abdominoperineal resection, and damage control operations consisting of washout, drainage, and diversion depending on the appropriate clinical situation. |
