T HE FACT THAT developments related to ambulatory surgery in Germany are covered in daily newspapers and consumer journals I reflects their importance as a prominent national health care issue. Endeavours to reduce costs in the German health care system and, to a lesser extent, patient demand are the driving forces behind this development. The practice of ambulatory anesthesia in Germany, its development, and its current situation caunot be discussed without making reference to the cimnmstances under which ambulatory surgery is practiced in Germany. In particular, almost all relevant statistical data refer to ambulatory surgery (and not to anesthesia). The definition of ambulatory surgery in Germany involves a large variety of procedures in which the patient spends the night before as welI as the night after the operation outside the surgical facility. |
