EFFECT OF SEEDING DATE ON STAND ESTABLISHMENT, SEED AND FORAGE YIELD OF ALTAI WILD RYEGRASS

Popis:	Altai wild ryegrass (Leymus angustus (Trin.) Pilger ’Prairieland’) was seeded in two experiments on irrigated land to determine the influence of seeding date on stand establishment, seed and forage yield. Experiment I was seeded at intervals during fall 1975 to summer 1976. Experiment II was seeded at 2-wk intervals from April to November 1984. Best stand establishment, seed and forage yield occurred from early spring (April/May) seeding dates. A threshold response in the effect of seeding date on seed and forage yield was observed in both experiments. This observation supports a hypothesis that Altai wild ryegrass seedlings exhibit a juvenile stage, similar to Russian wild ryegrass. It was concluded that stand establishment, seed and forage yield of Altai wild ryegrass can be maximized in southwestern Saskatchewan by seeding in early spring.Key words: Ryegrass (wild), Leymus angustus, Elymus angustus, thermal time, irrigation
