This study will investigate the association between pro-social behaviors in adolescence and the pro-social behaviors in their social network. Pro-social behavior is measured by the number of coins that participants give (instead of keeping) to a classmate in a dictator game. Based on two peer nomination questions (“which classmates do you like” and “which classmates do you consider to be your friend?”), social network graphs will be constructed of friendships within the class. Exponential Random Graph Models (ERGMS) will be used to assess the likelihood of tie-presence in the observed network (adolescents affiliating with one another) given a parameter. With these ERGM’s, we will test the relationships between social networks and pro-social behaviors in adolescents. Specifically, this study will investigate (a) whether friends show the same number of prosocial behaviors and (b) whether showing more pro-social behaviors is related to the (sociometric) popularity of adolescents. |
