Popis: This paper describes the design, development and use of a real-time downhole whirl detection system employed in a latest generation point-the-bit rotary steerable system ( Figure 1 shows the general arrangement). The system employs a novel yet simple detection sensor sensitive to whirl but passively filters out lateral vibration. The combined results of laboratory testing and field trials clearly demonstrate this new whirl measurement system is more effective in detecting backward whirl than traditional vibration sensors. Case studies of real field applications are included in which the detection system was successfully deployed to optimize the drilling process, through the prevention of undesirable BHA dynamics.
