Popis: Publisher Summary This chapter discusses an experiment that was carried out to investigate the carbohydrate metabolism of the giant African Snail, Achatina fulica. From the observations made in this experiment, it can be concluded that in the gut of the mollusc, Achatina fulica, there are some cells that produce an insulin-like secretion that can regulate the metabolism of glycogen in the tissues of the animal. The phosphoric acid–ethanol extracts of the digestive glands and the pyloric intestine of the giant African snail were observed to enhance glycogen deposition in rat diaphragm. It is possible that the insulin-like substance is produced in the digestive diverticulum and pylorus of the mollusc, Achatina fulica, by the columnar cells. The administration of a load of glucose was found to elevate the blood sugar level in the snail. The injection of alloxan into Achatina fulica resulted in the elevation of the blood glucose level. When slices of the foot muscle of the snail were incubated with bovine insulin, it was observed that the activity of UDPG-glycogen synthetase was increased in muscle.
