High-Speed Biopsy Punch for Electron Microscopic Studies of Human Skin

Popis: To the Editor.— In a research project, it was necessary to obtain small biopsy specimens, and the following description indicates our superior procedure. Punch biopsies 1 mm in diameter were obtained with a stainless steel biopsy punch attached to a high-speed dental drill. This method is rapid, requires no anesthetic, and provides specimens suitable for electron microscopy. Samples were obtained using a stainless steel punch in a dental drill. The experimental area was 2.5 cm in diameter, or less, and it was desirable to obtain the specimens without the use of an anesthetic. These considerations led to the use of the 1-mm stainless steel punch joined with the high-speed dental drill. After samples had been obtained successfully from the first four volunteers, a guard was devised that regulated the depth to which the punch could penetrate.
