This chapter reviews the counterfactual approach that seems to be as linked to the imagination as it is to the dimension that is generally considered to be historically scientific. It covers the establishment of facts, the formulation of hypotheses, the use of a theoretical apparatus or mathematical tools, and the search for objective as well as causal relationships between phenomena. It also deals with the radical opposition between the use of the imagination and a so-called scientific approach centered on a strictly objective reality. The chapter talks about overcoming contradictions by showing how the conceptions of science, modes of relation, or divisions of the world were the products of history or were substantiated and inspired by primary imaginations, which testify to human creativity. It addresses the question of causality or causal argumentation in history. |
