Understanding culture is extremely important. It is a key element of partnership building because it enables participants to develop equitable long-term relationships based on respect and trust. Both in-country and visiting faculty members and scientists focused on technical solutions to community problems may be reluctant to invest the time needed to learn how to navigate a new culture and develop personal relationships with locals. Yet, in the absence of such relationships, agricultural-based projects or any other development projects initiated and funded by outsiders are likely to fail.” |
