Prospects of growing chickpea in Ukraine

Popis: Relevance of the research topic. Chickpea is a valuable legume and an important food crop. It is characterized by the highest nutritional value among all leguminous crops, a large number of vitamins and other biologically valuable substances, which determines the high demand for its grain. Chickpeas are very popular and are grown in many countries around the world. Its seeds are rich in protein, and the cultivation technology is characterized by unpretentiousness to the conditions of soil fertility and permanent drought resistance. It is the last factor that is more relevant today than ever for the development of domestic agriculture, which is becoming increasingly dependent on changes and fluctuations in climatic conditions. Formulation of the problem. The incentive for growing chickpeas is the higher profitability of niche legume crops compared to traditional ones, growing demand and relatively low competition on the world market. However, chickpeas today can be considered an underestimated crop in Ukraine. Setting the goal and objectives of the research. Analyze trends in chickpea market development in Ukraine. Argue the possibility of obtaining its specific advantages both in the domestic and foreign markets. To justify the main directions of increasing chickpea production and increasing its role in ensuring the country’s food security in the conditions of European integration. Research method or methodology. The article uses the methods of comparative analysis, graphic, system approach, logical generalization, computational and constructive. Presentation of the main material (research results). For farmers, chickpeas can become a marginal crop no less profitable than traditional sunflower and rapeseed, especially under rather unstable climatic conditions and high price volatility of the agricultural market. Field of application of results. The results of the research can be used in the practical activities of modern agricultural enterprises to increase the level of their economic efficiency. Conclusions according to the article. Chickpea is one of the most valuable leguminous agricultural crops, which has a high nutritional value, a good margin and can take a worthy place in crop rotation.
