HIGHLY malignant, rapidly growing tumor strains have been developed from cases of naturally occurring lymphomatosis by transplantation of the tumor cells into healthy chickens (Burmester and Prickett, 1945; Furth and Breedis, 1933; Olson, 1941b). Using the strain developed by Olson (1941b), Burmester and Prickett (1944) showed that a relatively small dosage of tumor cells would produce local tumors and induce an immunity which could not be overwhelmed by a large or repeated dose of the same agent. This immunity was found to be present for at least 202 days. Since there is a direct cellular relation between the tumor of the case of naturally occurring lymphomatosis originating the particular strain and the tumor of the resulting transplanted strain, one might expect that there would be some relationship between a transplanted strain and other cases of naturally occurring lymphomatosis. Thus a demonstrable immunologic relationship would not only be of theoretical interest . . . |
