Popis: | Department of Oral Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, ThailandBACKGROUND: Survivin is an inhibitor of apoptosisprotein. Heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) is a molecularchaperone that is involved in protein folding and matu-ration. Alterations in the expression of survivin andHsp90 have been reported in several chronic inflamma-tory diseases. No study has evaluated the expression ofsurvivin and Hsp90 in the same lesion of oral lichen planus(OLP). The objective of this study was to investigate theexpression of survivin and Hsp90 in biopsy specimens ofpatients with OLP and controls.METHOD: Formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded biopsyspecimens from 29 patients with OLP and 29 healthysubjects were used in this study. Immunohistochemicalmethods were used to detect the expression of survivinand Hsp90 in the oral epithelia of these two groups. Thedistributions of positively stained epithelial cells wereevaluated with a semiquantitative method, using animmunostaining score system.RESULTS: Expression of survivin and Hsp90 in oral epi-thelia of patients with OLP was significantly different incomparison with that in controls (P = 0.001 and P < 0.001respectively). These differences were in the directiontowards reduction in the expression of survivin andHsp90 in the oral epithelia of patients with OLP .CONCLUSION: Ourresultsprovidedadditionalevidencethat alterations in the expression of survivin and Hsp90 inoralepitheliamightbeassociatedwithpathologicalstress, such as chronic inflammation, in patients with OLP.J Oral Pathol Med (2009) 38: 55–62Keywords: chronic inflammation; heat shock protein 90; orallichen planus; survivin |
