Popis: When the first edition of this book was published in 1975, it contained a chapter [1] entitled ‘Ultra-high modulus organic fibres’, which was based essentially upon literature published up to and including 1973. It dealt particularly with highly oriented aromatic polyamide fibres based on poly(p-benzamide), produced by spinning liquid crystalline solutions, and with a few closely related but not necessarily liquid crystalline amide-based structures. There has since been very considerable development in the field of ultrahigh modulus fibres, including not only great strides forward in the improvement of processing and properties of aromatic polyamides but also the introduction on the one hand of melt-processable liquid crystalline polymers and on the other hand of high modulus fibres based on relatively flexible polymer structures, mostly polyethylene, through processes that permit the application of very high draw ratios.
