Popis: This report presents the results of cultural resources investigations conducted on 6,800 noncontiguous acres on Avon Park Air Force Range (APAFR) in Polk and Highlands counties, Florida. The investigations consisted of a Phase I cultural resources survey, a predictive model for locating prehistoric cultural resources in the form of a land stratification structure, a World War II historic context, and historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) Level IV documentation of extant World War II structures on APAFR. The research was conducted from December 1995 to July 1996 under contract (No. DACA63-93-D-0014, Delivery Order No. 197) with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Fort Worth District, acting at the request of the U.S. Air Force Air Combat Command (ACC) and APAFR. The report is divided into three main sections. The first section presents the results of a cultural resources inventory of 6,800 acres on APAFR. Included in this section is a discussion of the physical environment; previously located sites; an overview of the culture history of the area; predictive models for site location; and evaluation and treatment recommendations for the resources discovered. The second section describes the construction of a GIS predictive model. Section 3 provides a historic context for APAFR during World War II; presents the results of a HABS Level IV inventory of extant World War II structures on the Range; and offers recommendations for the treatment of these facilities. The final section is followed by the references cited in the main body of the text. Site forms and survey information are presented in Appendices A and B, respectively. Appendices C through G provide information concerning the acquisition of land for APAFR and the physical development of the facility during the war years. Appendix H offers a list of all properties on the Range that are 45 years or older, and Appendix I contains Florida Historical Structure Forms for selected structures. A complete list of artifacts recovered during the survey appears in Appendix J.
