Ten different kinds of wood with parameters thought to be within the range suitable for viola back plates have been built into ten 16‐in. violas. Sample test strips were cut from each piece of wood in both the crossgrain and longitudinal grain orientations, and the strips tested acoustically in their fundamental mode giving information on velocity of sound, density, damping, log decrement, and Young's modulus. These parameters will be presented and discussed in relation to those of woods for violin backs as tested by Haines and by Barducci and Pasqualini. |
