Very few fisheries biologists have adequate understanding of the subject of fisheries acoustics. The relative newness of the subject and its complexity have inhibited the educational process. This deficiency has been addressed by formal academic education and by training through extension or short courses. Education through academic institutions has been hindered by the newness of the subject area, its interdisciplinary nature and budget constraints. The short courses, which have been primarily provided through industry, have been the most effective in exposing fisheries professionals to these techniques, but they lack the depth of training needed to effectively address the educational needs. In the long run, academic institutions must do a better job of education in this area. |
