Popis:	The configuration of the 4,6- O -pruvate ketal in the Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcal) type XXVII polysaccharide has been established from 1 H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of the natural product and of model compounds. Inhibition of the homologous precipitin reaction by synthetic, diastereoisomeric pyruvate ketals showed that the configuration of the pyruvate ketal contributes to the serological specificity of the type XXVII polysaccharide.
