Popis: Selenium is an essential micronutrient, taken up by plants from the soil and ingested by animals in feeds and forages. Problems occur with it, at both ends of the supply spectrum. When it is present in excess, it causes loss of hair, separation of hoof tissue, and, sometimes, premature death. When deficient, animals suffer myopathies of both heart and skeletal muscle, cell exudative problems, liver and pancreatic damage, and interference with normal growth and reproduction. Beyond these specific problems, selenium deficiency appears, from recent research, to contribute to malfunction of the immune processes by which animals are protected against disease. This paper examines how selenium can be made available to animals safely, to the economic benefit of animal production.
