In addition to its effects on the patient and those close to him or her, AIDS also has societal consequences, which to some extent can be expressed in economic terms. The first publications on the economic impact of AIDS, produced in the United States, report costs for the treatment and care of AIDS patients varying between $75,000 and $100,000 per person per year (Hardy et al., 1986; Pascal, 1987). More recent publications quote considerably lower cost estimates, ranging from $25,000 to $40,000 (Hay et al., 1988; Bloom and Carliner, 1988; Hellinger, 1988). |
