This paper presents a new approach for the dimensioning, positioning and operation of energy storage systems to fulfill the (n-l) security criterion in high-voltage grids. The method proposed consists of an optimization algorithm which minimizes the total stored applied energy, while maintaining the power loadings on all grid lines for all possible line outages beneath the thermal loading limits allowed. The load flow calculations and the modeling of the line outages for the (n-l) state have been realized with the aid of AC distribution factors. The approach suggested has been implemented and evaluated for a test high-voltage grid. The results demonstrate the feasibility of ensuring the (n-l) security criterion through a controlled use of storage energy systems which could replace or reduce an otherwise necessary grid expansion. |
