We identified the dynamics of the central respiratory chemical controller of eight normal subjects by measuring the ventilatory response to inhalation of a gas mixture that was switched pseudorandomly (breath-by-breath) between 100% 02 and 95% 02 + 5% C02. From these data, we obtained the 'equivalent' response of ventilation to a single breath of inspired CO2 (2.5%) using cross-correlation analysis (XCORR) as well as prediction-error method (PEM). Compared to XCORR, PEM required significantly fewer data points and provided the closed-form response (i.e. transfer function). In response to a single breath of CO2 in 02, ventilation of man shows a second-order response (max. response 1% above mean ventilation) that lasts for about 100 seconds. |
