Popis: | The collagen crosslinking in cortical rib biopsies was determined before and after 90 days of treatment with dietary calcium and an anabolic steroid (Durabolin) in two osteoporotic women with differing subjective symptoms. Bone biopsy samples were reduced with 3H-sodium borohydride and the collagen crosslinks determined by radiochromatographic analysis. The crosslinks observed initially in Patient A were indicative of poor mineralization, but after treatment the crosslink pattern implied a decreased rate of bone resorption. Patient B exhibited biochemical changes which indicated decreased resorption after treatment, but only minor changes in the reducible compounds of collagen were observed. The changes in bone collagen crosslinking appear to be an adaptive response induced by the extent of the biochemical changes related to calcium homeostasis. |
