Popis: The effect of calcium on the absorption of monovalent cations has been reported by many workers 3 5. Jacobson et al. 3 have found that this effect is a function of the pH of the external solution and the monovalent cation involved. The presence of Ca++ may enhance, depress or have no effect on the absorption of monovalent cations. Ca++ has been found 2 to stimulate the uptake of SOi and HPOi. In a previous paper 1 the writer has shown that Cl~-uptake from chloride solutions of monovalent cations is modified by the calcium content of roots. It has been postulated that Ca++ reduces the magnitude of the negative Cl~-uptake. Should Ca++ in the root play an important role in the reduction of the negative charge of root membranes, we would expect that when sodium constitutes the dominant cation in root, the negative charge increases and hence Cl~-uptake will be reduced. In the present study a comparison is made of Cl~-uptake by roots high in Ca++ and roots high in Na+ from chloride solutions of monoand divalent cations at 26° and 2°C.
