Observations on seedlings of 18 species of Agalinis Raf. indicate a diversity of seedling types based on variation in shape and size of cotyledons, presence or absence of hairs on the hypocotyls, and types of trichomes present on the adaxial surface of cotyledons. Three major trichome types occur repeatedly among numerous species, while other hair types are restricted to one or a few taxa. Seedling features are often distinctive at the species level and correlate well with data from other sources with regard to sectional and subsectional placement of species within the genus. |
