The United States may be becoming an oligarchy, plutocracy, or an aristocracy of inherited wealth. To prevent this, we need to invigorate a spirit of democracy. Chicago seems to be moving in this direction. But as a nation we need to take steps such as a fairer tax system, regulation of transnational corporations, fairer immigration rules and a path to citizenship, enforcement of civil rights, public financing of campaigns, and repeal of Citizens United. We should follow with restrictions on campaign contributions, automatic voter registration, and a dozen similar steps – 25 in all. These reforms depend on civic virtue and engagement. It is possible that our democracy will die. It can be saved only by political action. |
