The control of dendritic crystal growth in thin film gels of a bovine serum albumin–sodium chloride (BSA–NaCl) mixture has been investigated by atomic force microscopy. The crystal growth patterns show an orthogonal dendritic growth, in which linear crystals of several hundred microns in length form the basic motif. Secondary growth from these crystals is observed to occur along only one face and at regular intervals of about 30 microns. The control of secondary growth is achieved by the formation of triangular crystallites along the opposing face and by capping at the extremities. No apparent bulk phase separation between BSA and NaCl is observed, although it is believed that the triangular crystallites are NaCl and thus represent a controlled local mesoscopic phase separation. |
