| Popis: | Neurogenic bowel dysfunction (NBD) is a consequence of dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system leading to impairment of sensory and/or motor control; it includes constipation, incontinence, and disordered defaecation. The cause of the dysfunction is damage or disease of the central nervous system, which leads to disruption of the neural pathways responsible for normal function of the colon, rectum, and anal canal. Bowel dysfunction can be particularly challenging for individuals, and is compounded for those with spinal cord injury and other central nervous system diseases and/or disorders. The NBD score provides an option in the assessment of individuals with bowel dysfunction. It is simple to use and offers practitioners an additional tool to support their assessment and management of patients with NBD, avoiding the need for the completion and evaluation of multiple tools in an attempt to ascertain symptom severity in patients with central nervous system disease and/or damage. |
