This chapter is concerned with the analysis of the steroids collectively known as progestogens. This group consists of progesterone (4-pregnene-3,20-dione) and its metabolites, which are naturally occurring C21 steroids. The metabolites are derivatives of two hydrocarbon isomers, namely 5α-pregnane (allopregnane) and 5β-pregnane, which differ only in the spatial configuration of the hydrogen atom at position 5 of the steroid nucleus. Quantitatively, the 5β metabolites of progesterone are the most important and include pregnanolone (3α-hydroxy-5β-pregnan-20-one) and pregnanediol (5β-pregnane3α,20α-diol). |
