Popis: Since the late 1990s, genetically modified (GM) plants are grown in Brazil. Current developments indicate that Brazil is the second player in the global production of GM crops. Beginning with the approval of the first transgenic crop for commercial release in 1998, a wide public debate took place in the country helping to subsidize the construction of a modern science-based legal frame to regulate the sector. Private companies dominated the scenario, but the contribution of the public sector was determinant to provide decision-makers with sound scientific information and to develop the expertise in the area.
