Information management and communication between project actors is key to successful management of construction projects. Inaccurate measurements and conflicting data can lead to costly mistakes, and ambiguities in material take-offs can ruin estimates and schedules. The objective of this paper is to present a framework that models the interactions between project information and the project actors who produce, use and/or share project information. The framework recognizes the coupling between project participants and project information, and implies that the effectiveness of a technology platform lies most importantly in its ability to allow for effective communication of project information and value addition among project actors, during the design and construction phases. It is expected that the proposed framework can be used to proactively identify interactions that can impede or reinforce the effectiveness of a technology/platform within an organizational network. Within this context, the use of building information models (BIM) and integrative platforms such as Autodesk Navisworks is discussed to understand how they can allow for seamless exchange of project information between project participants. The paper concludes with discussion of two case reports. The first case illustrates a failure in the flow of information that could have been prevented by using an integrative platform like Navisworks. The second case profiles a project from a leading design/construction firm that has used BIM/Navisworks effectively to reduce project costs and delays. |
