The purpose of the present study is to test the effectiveness of an evaluative conditioning procedure to enhance participants’ (students) self-esteem. Indeed, previous research has shown that implicit self-esteem can be improved using EC (Baccus, Baldwin, & Packer, 2004). Other studies showed that this effect persisted over time and that participants were subsequently insensitive to negative intelligence feedback (Dijksterhuis, 2004). In this experiment, a conditioning procedure will be used to associate personal identity (i.e., personal pronoun such as the first name) with positive stimuli (i.e., positive images). We argue that participants’ self-esteem should increase after the positive identity conditioning, more than in the neutral conditioning condition. |
