Glasses formed from silicon, arsenic and tellurium were found to have good infrared transmission from 1 to 20 μ and have high softening points(∼500°C). Absorption bands occur at 10, 14 and 20 μ. The optical properties of samples were maintained while being heated in the atmosphere up to temperatures as high as the softening point of the glass. The transmission of two high temperature glasses was found to increase with substitution of 5 atom percent antimony for silicon or arsenic. The index of refraction of the glasses determined from reflectivity measurements was found to vary from 2.4 to 3.5 depending upon composition. Some electrical measurements were made. |
