Tradition Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a long history of clinical and safety records. The application of TCM in cosmetic products has become a popular trend in the industry. The cosmetic application of TCM emerged in pre-Qin dynasty (before 221 BC), which contained numerous historical records of their usage in skin disease and beauty. The principle of TCM is a balance of “Yin” and “Yang,” the two opposing forces, as suggested in Taoism. The imbalance of the two forces is proposed in accounting for skin problems. With this principle in mind, herbal extract and/or herbal formula has been tailored for facial beauty; in particular, a rich record has described the herbal prescription for concubines in the royal palace aiming to remove freckles, soothe skin, and prevent wrinkles. In this chapter, the history and usage of TCM in cosmetics are summarized. In addition, the future perspective of TCM in this industry is being discussed. Although TCM in cosmetic products seems to have a shining future, the problems of herb authenticity and toxic contamination are hindering the development. Nevertheless, TCM meets the slogan of “green beauty” for cosmetic industry and consumer. |
