The decay of 180 Lu has been studied with Ge(Li) and scintillation spectrometers. The sources were produced using 14.8 MeV neutrons with both natural and enriched targets of hafnium. A half-life of 5.3 ± 0.3 min was observed for the decay of 180 Lu while the energies and relative intensities of 19 associated γ-rays were determined to an accuracy of at least 500 eV. Beta-decay branches of 2.7 ± 0.15, 2.0 ± 0.15, and 1.5 ± 0.1 MeV were determined with the highest energy group populating the third member of the ground state rotational band of 180 Hf. This information along with the results of γγ and βγ coincidence studies was combined and a decay scheme for 180 Lu is proposed. The levels of 180 Hf populated in this decay lie at energies of 93.308( I = 2 + , K = 0), 308.549( I = 4 + , K = 0), 1200.2( I = 2 + , K = 2), 1292.0 ( I = 3 + , K = 2), 1375.5, 1527.6, 1539.4, and 1608.4( I = 4 + , K = 4) keV; the exhibited level pattern and decay modes are discussed in terms of the unified model. Additional information is also provided on the decay of 180m Hg and 179 Hf. |
