Popis: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder. Type 1 diabetes is caused by autoimmune destruction of the pancreas, making patients dependent on exogenous insulin; during pregnancy these patients are at increased risk for diabetic ketoacidosis and hypoglycemia. Type 2 diabetes is caused by decreased insulin sensitivity and often they can be managed with oral agents; these patients are generally older and more likely to be obese. Pregnancy outcomes for women with pregestational diabetes are improved with glucose monitoring and control [1].
