Popis: | This essay argues that the resolving scenes of Lenz's 1774 comedy Der Hofmeister ironize the conventional return to social order within the comedic mimesis, simultaneously underscoring the artifice of such order. After teetering on the brink of tragedy, Lenz's work proves itself a radical exaggeration of a comedy, ending with dazzling tableaux of reconciliation, reunion, and marriage. When analyzed, these final spectacles appear designed to subvert the limitations and requirements placed on the comedic genre by the archon of 18th century poetics, Johann Gottsched. This article concludes that by exposing the structural mechanism at work in most dramatic comedy, Der Hofmeister anticipates postmodern sensibilities. |
