Popis: Haematemesis, the vomiting of blood, is the major sign of an upper gastrointestinal bleed. It encompasses fresh bright red blood, streaks of blood mixed with stomach contents and the classically described ‘coffee ground’ vomit indicating old, partially digested blood. It can be scary for patients and doctors alike, and is not an easy thing to assess or manage in the community setting. The focus must be on the haemodynamic stability of the patient and on identifying factors associated with increased mortality. Significant haematemesis is a poor prognostic factor and needs prompt transfer to hospital for assessment and resuscitation.
