This chapter investigates the marking of oblique nominals (Recipients and Possessors) in Romanian and the competition between inflexional and prepositional marking. We start with a seemingly simple question: are there any contexts in which one pattern or the other is favoured? To answer this question, we consider the development of the marking of oblique functions from the oldest texts through to modern Daco-Romanian and its regional varieties. In so doing, we focus on the contexts in which the analytic markers were attested in old Romanian (and some where they are still present to this day) and the phenomenon of double marking. The cyclic repetition of grammaticalization processes is also addressed. Other topics investigated include the multifunctionality of certain markers (and their ambiguity), and the direction of the development in the marking of oblique functions in spoken Daco-Romanian and dialectal varieties. |
